Mexican American Traditional Arts and Culture Content Standards Connections
This unit is very adaptable and supports student learning toward the content standards in a number of ways. The strongest connections are in social sciences and the arts.
The Arts

Students will:
- observe and respond to work by Mexican American traditional artists in Oregon.
- identify Mexican American folk and traditional arts and their functions within a Mexican American community.
- understand that traditional arts are connected to the history and culture of a community as well as an artist's personal experiences.

- identify traditions within students' own families and communities
- make a connection between students' traditions and the traditions of their parents.
- read maps to identify geographic features of Mexico and eastern Oregon.
- create maps of students' own physical and cultural communities.
- identify cultural characteristics of Mexican American communities.
- research in-depth a topic related to the unit.
English

Students will:
- read (aloud, skimming, and closely reading) from the text of this unit
- draw connections between the unit text, other informational texts and students' own experiences
- write essays, poems, letters, stories and other written forms to relate the unit text to students' own experiences.
- create a booklet, newsletter or write a research paper to demonstrate information learned in the unit.
