Practice Scoring Banner

The Practice Scoring application is designed to give teachers as much practice as necessary in order to become more familiar with using the scoring guides. Student writing samples are currently available with plans to move into other content areas in the future. Though the examples used in the application are on-demand samples, i.e., from the state writing assessment test prompt, we believe that they will help to meet the standard of students becoming better writers and teachers becoming better and more consistent at assessing student writing.

Oregon's Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) has endorsed the Practice Scoring application and helped to edit these guidelines for teachers working towards licensure renewal through the six Domains of Professional Competency. For a complete explanation of the requirements and the options available to meet the licensure renewal requirements refer to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for Licensure Renewal handbook. Educators may develop an individual CPD plan in collaboration with their supervisor or a district may establish guidelines that have been reviewed and approved by the District School Board. Each CPD plan shall have as a primary purpose improved student learning by improving professional skills of educators. A copy of an individual Professional Development Plan has been made available from TSPC for download in Adobe Acrobat format.

According to the guidelines as outlined in Oregon Administrative Rule (OAR) 584-090-0010, educators shall choose activities and experiences that are based on at least one of the following Domains of Professional Competency:
  1. Subject Matter or Specialty
  2. Assessment Strategies
  3. Methods and Curriculum
  4. Understanding Diversity
  5. State and National Education Priority
  6. Use of Technology in Education
David Myton, Executive Director of TSPC, recommended that use of the Practice Scoring application could apply to competencies 1, 2, 5, and 6.

We have also recommended some time estimates for teachers when using the Practice Scoring application. These are only approximations with actual time spent dependent on a variety of factors. Please note that one clock hour is equal to one PDU.

Suggestions for completing the Professional Development Plan

Since working in an online environment may not be as familiar for some as for others we have presented some ideas for ways to include the use of the application in your overall plan.
  1. Proposed activities and experiences to meet your goals:
    • As an elementary teacher, I propose to work through the writing samples from benchmark 1 and 2. By working through samples at both levels I will gain a greater understanding of where my student's work fits most appropriately.
    • I will propose to my principal that I offer professional development to every teacher in the building to ensure scoring consistencies in writing across grades 1 through 5.

  2. How will the plan help you to enhance student learning?
    • By using the Practice Scoring application I will hone my skill in assessing my student's work resulting in challenging them to achieve at a higher level by knowing where each individual student is performing.
    • I can offer parents opportunities to learn the scoring process to better support my work in the classroom.

  3. What resources will you use to complete your plan?
    • I will use OPEN's online practice scoring application for writing.
    • As I become more confident in the process and my ability to use the writing scoring guide I will assess all of my student's work in the same way.
