This reading assessment is to be given in two parts and will take approximately one and one-half hours to complete (more than one class period). It may be given over more than one day.
Day 1:"The Prophet and the Gift" - Part I, is designed to be a teaching tool. Students will read Part I silently, taking marginal notes, and individually predict what will happen in Part II. After students are finished with their prediction, conduct a class discussion of part one. Included in this packet are some sample questions you may wish the class to discuss.
Day 2:Hand out "The Prophet and the Gift" - Part II, both text and questions. Discuss the importance of students writing marginal notes while they read, expressing their thoughts, knowledge of the text, their predictions, and conclusions of the selection. This will help the assessing teacher in scoring their understanding of the text. Students will read the selection, take notes, and then begin to answer the questions that follow. At the end of the class period, collect all student assessments.
Day 3:Pass back "The Prophet and the Gift" - Part II assessments to students. Allow time for students to complete the assessment. Collect at the end of the class period. Score the students' assessments.
